This one’s hard to write about— because the point is, it’s about having not a thought in your mind. A blank slate. How do we even get there?
In meditation, they’re always telling you to let thoughts drift by like clouds, without wishing they’d disappear or judging.
Then I came across a video on TikTok—which is, of course, where you go to let your mind wander—and someone was telling me to stop scrolling and search instead for music using a perfect fifth. Because, apparently, the resonance of that interval would naturally get you unstuck. Clear my mind with the sound doing the work.
The idea that sound and frequency can affect the body and the brain has always intrigued me. (Which the algorithm is well aware of.)
So I took the challenge. I tried writing a piece using only perfect fifths. And what we get is “Perfect Fifth of Midnight.” I imagine midnight as the slice of time when transformation is most available. So if music can make a difference, it’s then.
Does it work?
One person on TikTok commented: “Sounds great! It actually did help calm my mind and then helped me focus on my ‘to do’s’ for the day.”
So you’ll have to listen and decide for yourself.
